Safety – House Fires

The cold and chilly season is in full-effect!

Honestly, I can’t stand it. I’ve never been the biggest fan of slipper roads or four layers of anything other than cheese and bacon.

Sadly, one of the first stories that you’ll hear from your local news network in the mornings is: how many people have recently experience/suffered a house fire while attempting to warm their house.

That’s terrible! I mean, the concept of warming your house with what little you may have at the time and BAM – you’re out in the very thing that you were trying to keep away or worse!

Hey – we’re not talking about that 1% that are sitting in the corner around a homebrewed garbage fire not expecting anything bad to happen. No.

The people in most cases simply haven’t had their chimneys cleaned. Even if they have, something recently has blocked up their flue. Birds can sometimes be a killer nuisance.

Equipment failure, due to improper upkeep or installation, can hit at any time, and when put under the pressures of having to keep an entire household or even a small space heated all of the sudden, can fail right when you are taking a nap or laying down for the night.

Regular fireplaces must be taken SERIOUSLY. Even with proper wood types, sparks can decide to jump out and make that beautiful $2,500 Egyptian rug into a $75,000 room repair.

Wall heaters

Make sure nothing is placed against them. Every day that people come in and out for dinner, things gets misplaced.

Example: A chair with an oil based jacket hanging on the back that is within the range or ‘danger zone’ of those wall heaters, can quickly lead to setting the entire room ablaze if left alone.

We’ve heard about plenty of people in our families having been burnt by these things – what’s to have stopped something else from burning up or getting singed? You – Basic common sense.

But common sense isn’t so common 24/7. Nobody is perfect and I’m the ‘perfect’ example.

Taking simple and small steps every day to make sure that the next time Ol’ man Winter knocks, you will be prepared to kick his butt – safely.
